Bike Tour: Bruges - Brussels - 8 days

Bruges - Brussels

On this one-way cycling holiday, follow the Flemish Masters to the most beautiful towns in Belgium and admire their artworks in the Old Masters Museum in Brussels, St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, KMKSA and Rubens House in Antwerp, St. John’s Church in Mechelen and Groeninge Museum in Bruges.

In between towns, you will ride your bike through many different regions, often cycling alongside a river, following a signposted route.

Route
Day 1: Arrival Bruges
Day 2: Bruges - Maldegem
Day 3: Maldegem - Ghent
Day 4: Ghent - Dendermonde
Day 5: Dendermonde - Antwerp
Day 6: Antwerp - Mechelen
Day 7: Mechelen - Brussels
Day 8: Departure Brussels

Day 1:    Arrival Bruges

Organize your own journey to Bruges. Try to arrive early to make the most of your time in this wonderfully harmonious town with a consistently medieval look.  Cobblestones under your feet; swans in the lake; stone archways and bridges; pretty houses reflected in the canals… everything is picture-perfect.

Day 2:    Bruges - Maldegem
54 km

Follow the canal out of town. The Ghent-Bruges Canal dates to the 14th century and is one of the oldest in the country. Together with its towpaths, it forms a green corridor that has proved valuable for biodiversity. Past quiet villages such as Moerbrugge, Maria-Aalter and Knesselare, you will cycle through the flat Flemish countryside to Maldegem. If you are still in for a walk, explore Maldegemveld nature reserve which has some interesting flora, the product of sandy soil (low in nutrients; acidic) and superficial, waterlogged clay deposits. In the evening, put your feet up in Maldegem.

Day 3:    Maldegem - Ghent
57 km

Today you traverse the rural Meetjesland region, a cycling paradise with woods, meadowland and vast cropfields. Enjoy the play of light as you ride your bike through the woods of Het Leen and Drongengoed. Subsequently, it is easy-pedalling through the flat landscape to Eeklo, a small town known for its many sculptures. Then proceed to Ghent. The Old Town of Ghent is like an open-air museum. It is also a UNESCO Creative City of Music. The music scene here is thriving. Festivals, music institutions, the carillon, concerts, students of music having a singsong on the quays… music is everywhere.  After dark, the ambiance is magical, thanks to the town’s ingenious light plan.

Day 4:    Ghent - Dendermonde
46 km

For the main part of the day, the River Scheldt will be your guide. Follow it upstream past a string of Flemish villages and towns. A 13th-century castle is a real eyecatcher in the village of Laarne: a great place for a break. Also stop off in Dendermonde for a look at the Town Hall & Belfry and visit the Church of Our Lady boasting a baptismal font from the 11th century.  End the day in Dendermonde, where some delicious beers are brewed.

Day 5:    Dendermonde - Antwerp
57 km

Quickly make your way back to the Scheldt and cycle atop the river dike towards Antwerp. A delightful interlude: De Zilverreiger, a regional museum focused on preserving knowledge about trades and crafts that once flourished locally: basket weaving, river fishery, cooperage (barrel making), flax processing and clog making. After crossing the Scheldt by ferry, you will reach Kruibeke, home to Wissekerk Castle. In the 10th century this was a so-called water castle and part of the defense line of Antwerp along the river. Crown your day in Antwerp, a city with a long beer tradition and countless cafes. Discover the beautiful Old Town or go shopping for antiques and curio’s, home deco, vintage fashion finds or diamonds!

Day 6:    Antwerp - Mechelen
39 km

It’s only a short trip today so you have time to look around Antwerp some more, or visit a museum, before setting off towards Mechelen. If you are into military heritage, stop off in Mortsel to visit Fort no. 4 of the originally eight Brialmont Forts (1860-1864) that made up the defensive line of Antwerp. It is built in brick with sandstone decorations and stands on an island surrounded by a ditch and glacis. Then continue along quiet country lanes and alongside the River Nete to Duffel. And, yes! This is actually the town where “duffel” originated from: the heavy, woolly material used initially for bags and later for duffle coats, made popular by the British Royal Navy and still trendy today. In the 15th century, duffel was produced here and exported all over Europe: a profitable business for then-prosperous Duffel. In the town of Sint-Kathelijne-Waver, at the Ursuline Institute, a boarding school run by nuns, an exquisite surprise awaits. The convent/school complex, Our Lady of Wavre, is a successful blend of art nouveau, neo-Gothic, neo-Empire and art deco. Best of all: the winter garden! Feast your eyes on a masterpiece of art nouveau, an ode to nature, springtime and light! Top off your day in Mechelen, small but attractive.

Day 7:    Mechelen - Brussels
65 km

Ride your bike on tree-lined country lanes, past a series of ponds, along a river, around a wood and through meadows and cropfields to Brussels. Along the way, pass Tervuren, known for the Royal Africa Museum. In Brussels, you will find a mix of cultures, as can be seen in the streets, menus and people’s appearance. Head for the Grande Place and go for a walk. Not only does Brussels have Manneken Pis, it also has the most delicious waffles, chocolates and pints. This is a city where culture vultures, shopaholics, and gourmets & gourmands make merry!

Day 8:    Departure Brussels

One last hotel breakfast buffet and your cycling holiday will come to an end. Make your own way home.

Brakes: Shimano V Brakes (hand brakes)

Saddle: Selle Royal Freedom

Pedals: flat pedals (XLC)

Weight: circa 16,5 kilo

The e-bikes are Freebike Harlem or similar. The bikes have a small electric engine and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric engine.

Brakes: Shimano hydraulic discbrakes

Handlebars are adjustable without any tools

Tires: Continental

Pedals: Flat pedals

Saddle: Velo Comfort

Range battery: ca. 100 km (with normal use)

For children who are at least 125 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm). The bikes are Oxford Kick-Off bikes or similar, we also use child mountainbikes as child bike.

Assembly: Shimano 7 gears

Brakes: Shimano V-Brakes (hand brakes)

All our adult bikes come with hand brakes.

Childseat

For children up to 30 months old (max. 15 KG) it is possible to rent a front child seat. This is not possible with e-bikes, due to the display.

For children older than 30 months (max. 22KG) it is possible to rent a rear child seat. This is also possible with e-bikes.

Helmet

Helmets are not mandatory in Belgium, but can be rented for €15,- per piece.|
Available sizes: Adult: 54-61cm, Child: 50-55cm.

Lights

All our bikes come with both front- and rear lights. You need to push the button on the lamp and it will flash three times. This means that the lights will automatically start working when it gets dark.

When you push again, the lamp will flash one time and the lights will be turned off.

Locks

Our bikes come with a defender lock with plug in chain (cable lock that is attached to the regular lock, see picture).

You need to turn the key a bit, take out the pin from the cable lock and attach it to a pole/other bike/fence etc.

When you push the pin back into the regular lock, you need to lock the regular lock as you always do, and both locks will be secured.

Pannier

1 pannier is included at the 'standard' bikes and the e-bikes.

Height: 42 cm
Depth front to the side: 17 cm
Wide top: 32 cm
Wide down: 23 cm
Volume: 20 liters
It has an easy click-on/click-off system. The panniers are water resistant, so everything will stay dry.

Pedals

The rental bikes come with regular pedals, so no click-in/SPD pedals.

Quickrelease

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars.

Repairkit

There is one small puncture kit included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

Saddle

Saddles can be adjusted in height without using any tools, see ‘Quick Release’.
Our saddles don’t come with a gel cover.

Waterbottles

Dutch Biketours does not provide water bottles. We can also not guarantee that there are bottle holders on the bikes. You will always receive 1x pannier, so you can always store your water bottle in your pannier.

Child trailers can be rented for a maximum of two children who are up to 100 cm (max. 35 KG in total).

We mostly use the XLC Duo 2 child trailer.
Child trailers are not possible in combination with e-bikes.

Mile after wonderful mile of untroubled cycling is what we would wish our clients. However there is a minimal chance of breakdown along the way. If this thought is a nagging worry to you, a Bicycle Breakdown Assistance insurance policy may ease your mind. If you buy this insurance from our partner FietsNED in advance, their service is as follows. If your bike breaks down by the roadside a FietsNED bicycle repair man will drive to you in his repair van and fix your bike so you can continue your tour. You won’t have to pay him repair costs. If you are cycling on your own bicycle you will be charged for any new spare parts your bike may require. If you are renting a bicycle through Dutch Bike Tours any new parts are at our expense. If it turns out the bicycle cannot be repaired on the spot, or if you don’t wish to continue cycling, the repairman can drop you off somewhere in his van. One companion plus bikes may join you in the van.

The Bike Breakdown Pass is €2,75 per day per bike and can only be booked for every participant in a booking.

Do you wish to insure your bike against theft? The cost is € 3,- per day per standard hybrid bicycle.
For an electric bicycle, premium bike or racing bike: € 6,00 per day per bicycle.

An excellent cycle trip across Flanders! Very flat, with safe and segregated picturesque cycle paths, plus some short bits on very quiet back roads. Belgian motorists are also very courteous and respectful of cyclists! The cities of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels are all beautiful with great food and amazing beers. My wife and I would do it again. :)

Hotels excellent, breakfast excellent except B&B Dendernachten. However this was balanced by it being a marvellous building of the highest standard with a congenial host. Your routes worked very well on Komoot. I didn't have The KP numbers available on Komoot. It appears I needed to pay for an upgrade to allow the KP numbers to appear. Anyway, my wife had those very useful big KP numbers on the front of her bike. It worked ery well.

Our experience was good. We enjoyed the ride despite some unfavorable weather. Riding along the canals and through the gorgeous parks is super. Riding in the country was good, although some of the mud made it difficult. The cities are somewhat challenging. In general, the cities provide good access for bicycles. The issue is the other bikers. The Belgian bikers are very skilled and fast, and there are a lot of them. They are in a hurry as they use the bikes for commuting, transporting children and other daily affairs. Their speed and agility was intimidating.

We fell in love with Ghent. Our first time in Belgium, Ghent had fewer tourists than Brugge and more personality. A walk in Ghent by night is as magical as promised.

A fantastic trip and great way to see Belgium. Also a real sense of achievement from completing the cycle journey.

We loved Velotel Hotel as it had a bike theme. We also enjoyed our stay at B&B Abalona. What a beautiful relaxing place. We enjoyed the smaller quaint hotels than the bigger ones in Antwerp and Brussels. The amount of miles was perfect for seeing Belgium countryside and getting to each town to see the highlights.
